Last Saturday afternoon, a group of Dawg Nation board members went down to Craig Hospital to meet and visit with Cody Beekman. Most of us had met Cody's parents, Debbie and Phil, for the first time the previous Saturday while we were tearing up their house building a couple of ramps, installing some new doors and putting in a hardwood floor. But most of us hadn't actually met Cody yet, and we were really looking forward to it.
Our "Dawgfather" Marty Richardson had met with Jake Godber from the Colorado Avalanche earlier in the week, and Jake was able to score us some cool stuff from the club to take down and present to Cody. We received a signed stick from the whole team, an autographed picture from Cody's favorite player, Milan Hejduk, a signed hockey card from Joe Sakic, and various other souvenirs from the Avalanche.
So nine of us headed down to Craig, and spent the better part of an hour meeting with Cody, Debbie and Phil. We gave him all the Avs swag, which he appreciated very much, and talked about how much we've enjoyed adopting the Beekmans into our Dawg Nation family. It was one the most rewarding hours that I've personally ever spent, and I know the rest of the gang feels the same way.
Cody comes home in a couple of weeks, and will begin his journey to get better every day. And he'll have us there every step of the way. Once you're a Dawg, you're a Dawg forever. Get well soon, son.
Well done Dawgs! I understand Cody is thinking about getting a Dawg tattoo. That's super cool. Get well soon Cody!
